Maternal and Post-partum Nutrition: Current Insights and Recommendations
Pregnancy, lactation, and post-partum recovery are as old as time, but insights and recommendations that aim to optimize the health of the mother and the baby are always evolving. This webinar will cover preconception through post-partum, including the needs of both lactating and non-lactating mothers. We will review weight gain recommendations based on pre-pregnancy weight, caloric and nutrient needs, and special conditions like gestational diabetes, as well as the current thinking about seafood, caffeine, and vegan diets. Finally, recognizing that not all those who are pregnant have the same access to healthy foods, we will share resources designed to support nutritional needs.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- recognize the nutrition-related practices a person planning to become pregnant should follow;
- differentiate and recognize the caloric and nutrient needs of pregnant, lactating, and post-partum people based on their preconception weight, age, and health-related conditions;
- adapt generalized dietary guidance about caffeine, seafood, and more to the pregnant and lactating population; and
- identify public health resources that support the nutritional needs of pregnant, lactating, and post-partum people.
