Opioid Use Disorder (OUD): The Era of High Potency Synthetic Opioids and Deadly Adulterants

Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a health condition characterized by the ongoing problematic use of opioids that results in clinically significant distress or impairment. Fentanyl and other high potency synthetic opioids (HPSO) are increasingly present in US drug supplies, currently accounting for the majority of substance-related overdose/poisoning deaths. Moreover, numerous non-opioid adulterants have emerged which can have deadly potential. This presentation will review OUD, HPSO, common current adulterants along with strategies to reduce the risk of overdose and death from OUD in this new era of the opioid epidemic.
